Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated tracing this tradition to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم (meaning, a marfu hadith (tradition)), "when anyone dies the angels ask, 'what has he sent ahead (for the hereafter)?' But, the children of Aadam عليه السلام (his heirs) ask, 'what has he left behind?'" [2]
